The Be the One campaign raises awareness of the power of connection. Changing a person's life for the better can happen with one positive connection with just one person. We know this in our hearts and there is research to support it. Being the One for others is a simple way to put trauma/healing informed practices into action and transform our own lives, our families, and our communities.
Resilient Yolo developed the Be the One campaign to provide a concrete way for communities to encourage positive social connections in multiple settings This accessible, evidence-informed campaign is based on research that demonstrates one way both to prevent and heal from adversity is through safe, stable, nurturing relationships. While encouraging all of us to create more caring connections, the Be the One campaign also invites communities to dialogue about the impact of Adverse Childhood (and Community) Experiences (ACEs) and the science of resilience. Resilient Yolo created the campaign in Yolo County, but it is for anyone and everyone anywhere and everywhere. All of us have the ability (and the responsibility) to Be the One.
Research shows caring positive relationships support healthy child development, promote adaptive responses to stress, and contribute to positive mental and physical health. (https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/pdf/essentials-for-childhood-framework508.pdf.) We can feel the power of social connections in everyday life. We feel less stress when we get a hug from a friend or a smile from a stranger on a bad day. Our resilience is strengthened when we know someone in our life will support us in a crisis, reach out when we need empathy, or bear witness in tough times. We feel the power of connection when we feel seen and truly heard by others. Caring relationships have the power to recharge, inspire, comfort, and transform us. We have the power to do the same for others when we invest in connection.
Being the One is as simple as smiling, listening, caring, and sharing with those we encounter each day. The world we want is ours to create through our intentions, actions and reactions. Join us!

We would like to recognize the work of Natalie Audage, Lucy Morse Roberts and previous leadership in developing the materials for the Be the One project. We also want to acknowledge Tracy Fauver's leadership with Resilient Yolo. We are grateful to Gail Kennedy with PACEs Connection Network for her assistance with research and her partnership. We are also grateful for youth involvement and commitment to creating positive change in the world. The 2018 Building a Resilient Yolo Youth Leadership Team, comprised of high school students from across Yolo County, gave the first Be the One presentation. Additionally, Amelia Allison (a high school senior at the time) gave a Be the One presentation at the 2019 Youth Empowerment Summit.

There are many ways you can Be the One, beginning with a wave, a smile or both. Small acts of kindness can have a big impact. Advocating for others who are not in a position to advocate for themselves can transform not just one life but whole communities. A willingness to listen to and learn about others with a sense of wonder and free from judgment is a key step in creating more caring communities. Find the Be the One Guide in the Download Section below for more ideas.
If you are interested in taking steps along the journey of being trauma/healing informed by creating safe, stable, nurturing relationships, please find the Be the One Toolkit in the Download Section below and create a training. The toolkit is adaptable to any setting. Resilient Yolo is happy to help with trainings, too.
Let us know how you are making a difference! We are looking for stories to highlight. Are you and your family doing something to make your community a kinder place? We want to hear about it.
